Muslims object to violation of Ramadan rules on Brit TV show Eastenders

London, Oct.3 : The British Muslim community has raised strong objections to a Muslim character in the popular television show "Eastenders" eating during Ramadan. Complaints poured in after Masood Ahmed (Nitin Ganatra) was seen eating a chapatti in his shop. Muslims should fast between sunrise and sunset in the month-long religious festival.

When confronted on the show by Jane Beale (Laurie Brett), Masood said he was a "bad person". He said he found it difficult to fast because his job required him to sell food all day.

According to The Sun, the scene prompted 107 complaints from viewers, who thought it insulted Muslim values.

Some said the plot trivialized a serious religious experience while others thought it was unrealistic.

EastEnders bosses insisted the storyline was meant to show the character's "fallibility".

But the BBC has been forced to issue a statement saying it did not mean to cause offence.
