Police arrest rowdies, mobiles, weapons seized in raids

Chennai, Sep 28 (UNI) As part of weekend storming operation to weed out rowdy elements and curb crime rate in the city, Police arrested more than 400 people and took them into preventive custody, besides seizing foreign mobiles, foreign currencies and lethal weapons during the night-long raids.

The storming operation which began last night continued till the early hours today and was undertaken on the orders of Chennai City Police Commissioner R Sekar.

As part of routine vehicle checks during the operation, police seized more than 50 Korean-made mobile phones, 11 SIM cards, 3,000 memory cards, Rs 30,000 cash, and foreign currencies from a car, which did not stop at Anna Salai, last night.

After a hot chase, police stopped the car, effected the seizure and arrested two people. The duo confessed that they had smuggled these items to the city.

In another seizure during vehicle check, police recovered lethal weapons from an auto in which four criminals were travelling.

As the police inspected the auto and seized the weapons, the gang abandoned the vehicle and gave a slip to the police.

In all 43 rowdies, 54 history-sheeters, 11 criminals, 61 drunken elements were held.

About 110 persons detained on suspicion. A total of 812 people were fined for not wearing helmets and 78 persons were booked for rash driving.
