CPI asks Centre to stop inflow of direct funds for NREGS
Jaunpur, Sep 28 (UNI) Alleging widespread corruption in National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS), the Communist Party of India today urged the Centre not to provide funds to the gram panchayats directly.
''The party has even dashed off a letter to Union Rural Development Minister Raghuvansh Prasad Singh in this connection,'' CPI secretary Atul Kumar Anjan said here.
Irregularties in the NREGS have increased manifold since the funds were being supplied to the gram panchayats in a direct manner,'' he alleged.
The gram panchayat officials embezzle money and commit disparities in making and distributing job cards, besides giving misleading information on the actual working days of the labourers, the CPI leader charged.
As the state government has also failed to make the scheme a success, the Centre should stop providing the funds to the gram panchayats to keep a check.
