Chinese people rejects 'Ugly Betty'
London, Sep 21: The Chinese adaptation of the international hit Ugly Betty 'Ugly Wudi' is facing a backlash, after audiences rejected the lead star for being 'too pretty'. Chinese audiences have complained that the woman hidden behind round black frame glasses, braces and frumpy clothes is beautiful.
The story of a sweet but sartorially challenged and unattractive girl struggling through a world where looks count has been a hit around the world. Since the telenovela Yo soy Betty, la fea hit the small screen in Colombia, the comedy has been adapted in the US, Russia, Germany and India. Hunan Television, which produced the adaptation, refused to disclose any information about the actress who will play Lin Wudi. But after she appeared at a press conference on Tuesday, Chinese bloggers complained that she should be fatter, reports Telegraph.
An agent for the actress said she had put on 20 pounds for the role.
The actress also sunbathed to deepen her skin colour. Pale skin is traditionally prized in China and skin whitening creams products are a big industry.
The Chinese adaptation of Ugly Betty will debut on September 28.
