Cong workers, farmers associations stage demo

Tiruchirapalli, Sep 10: Hundreds of men and women belonging to Tiruchirapalli North District Congress and members of various farmers' associations staged a demonstration in front of the collectorate here today.

The demonstratrion, led by North District Congress President Rajasekharan, MLA, was in protest against the theft in the state government run sand-quarries.

The protesters demanded immediate action against the erring officials involved in the theft of sand.

Mr Rajasekaran, in a release said, though the state government had laid down several norms for sand business through government sand-quarries in the Cauvery and Coleroon river beds in the district, the officials were indulging in malpractices, resulting in huge loss to the exchequer.

He urged Chief Minister M Karunanidhi to put an end to this illegal sand business.

Later, a delegation led by Mr Rajasekaran submitted a memorandum to the District Collector in this regard.
