Police on toes over yesterday's clash in Sultanpur

Sultanpur, Sep 9 (UNI) Tension prevailed in Dastpur town here today, following yesterday's incident, where two groups had clashed with each other during a religious procession of Lord Ganesha.

ASP (east) Santosh Kumar Singh along with his team was maintaining a vigil in the area and no untoward incident was reported so far, official sources said.

Meanwhile, 51 people, including BJP leader Jai Prakash Chaturvedi, former MP Surya Bhan Singh, Nagar Palika Parishad president Praveen Agarwal, who reached the incident site today were arrested by the police, only to be released after few hours.

Yesterday, two groups had a clashed with each other during the the procession taken out for ''Ganpati Visarjan,'' after an elephant slipped of the chariot and checked into the area of the other community.

Seeing the animal, which also symbolises Lord Ganesha, entering their area, people had resorted to stone pelting resulting in clash between the groups.

The ASP along with his force had reached the spot and averted the possible communal clash.

A large number of police force was deployed in the area, which continued to maintain vigil as precautionary measure.
