Fire in Thermal unit cables yet again
Rupnagar, Aug 29 (UNI) Fire broke out on the control cables of unit no.5 of Guru Gobind Singh Super Thermal Plant here today, in the third incident of fire in the unit this summer.
According to sources, fire broke out this afternoon above RC feeder of unit no.5 at about 20 meter level due to accumulation of hot coal dust on the cables.
As a result, two coal mills of the unit tripped and some cables were damaged. The fire was controlled in about an hour, sources added.
Earlier, a fire had occurred on May 16, resulting in tripping of the unit. Another major fire in cable gallery on June 15 had forced Unit no. 5 to remain closed for 25 days.
According to sources the continuous emission of coal dust from coal mills and resultant accumulation of coal dust on steam pipes and cables due to poor maintenance was the main cause of repeated incidents of fire in the cables.
