AEC currently working on three uranium mines: Kakodkar
Mumbai, Aug 25 (UNI) Atomic Energy Commission Chairman Anil Kakodkar today said it was currently looking at three mines to augment the uranium fuel for the power plants and expressed confidence that the country would meet its fuel requirements.
He said each of these three mines should provide uranium for five units of 220 MW. While work on the Thummalapalle mine in Andhra Pradesh had already started, it should start production in about three years time. Prospecting would also commence in another ore area in Andhra Pradesh and Meghalaya, he added.
Dr Kakodkar had last week rushed to Meghalaya to create awareness about uranium mining and dispel the environmental fears in the northeastern state over the mining of the strategic ore.
He said that currently the Indian nuclear power plants were working 55 per cent of their capacity and this would slowly go up.
