AIADMK to protest Govt's move to take lands for University
Chennai, Aug 24 (UNI) The opposition AIADMK would hold a demonstration at Chief Minister M Karunanidhi's native town, Tiruvarur on August 26, protesting against the State Government's move to take over farmand for establishing Central University.
AIADMK General Secretary J Jayalalithaa, in a statement here said the DMK Goverment has engaged in taking over 700 acres of agriculture lands in and around Koradacherry union in Tiruvarur District for establishing the University.
She said these lands were cultivable lands and more than 2000 farmers and farm workers depend on these lands for their livelihood.
Unmindful of the protests by the local people, the authorities were taking over the land, she said.
Wanting to set up the University near the Memorial of Mr Karunanidhi's mother, the authorities were taking over the lands, after giving a false impression that these lands were fallow lands, Ms Jayalalithaa alleged.
These lands were cultivable lands and taking over the 700 acres of lands would affect the livelihood of the local people, she said and urged the Government to immediately drop the move.
To press this demand, the party's Tiruvarur Unit would hold a demonstration in front of District Collectorate.
Party's Agriculture-wing Secretary Durai Govindarajan would lead the agitation in the presence of District Secretary R Kamaraj, she added.
