HC directs police to give protection to MG Univerity VC

Kochi, Aug 22 (UNI) Kerala High Court today directed police to provide protection to Mahatma Gandhi University Vice Chancellor Jancy James.

A Division Bench comprising Justices H L Dattu and A K Basheer also cautioned police that if there was any default on the part of police in giving protection to Ms James, the court would view the matter very seriously and deal with it firmly.

The court gave the direction while hearing a petition filed by Ms James stating on August 18, a group of students under the banner of Students' Federation of India (SFI), blocked her way while a female student tried to push her down.

Ms James further submitted that she had to go on leave following the incident and needed police protection to discharge her duties as the Vice Chancellor.

The court had also issued notices to the State Chief Secretary, Kottayam District SP and the SFI leaders.
