MUTSU appeals CM to fulfill his promises

Imphal, Aug 17 (UNI) Manipur University Tribal Students Union (MUTSU) president Gonmei Gaisingam, today appealed the Chief Minister, O Ibobi Singh to fulfill his promises, made to the tribal students of Manipur University (MU).

As per the tribal population of Manipur, which is 34 percent MUTSU had demanded 34 percent reservation for tribal students in MU.

MU officials, however, confirmed that it is a Central University.

Since seven percent reservation is fixed for the Scheduled Tribe (ST) throughout the country it would remain same here as well.

A decision in this regard can only be taken by the Central government, they added.

The chief minister had led a delegation to New Delhi to highlight the plight of the tribal students.

Following stir by the students, he also assured to take another delegation to New Delhi.

Meanwhile Mr Gaisingam informed that they were getting help from Information minister TN Haokip,Tribal development minister DD Thaisii and Education minister Jayanta Kumar urging the government to ensure that the STs get their rights.

MUTSU further appealed the MU, to stop all recruitment until the issue was resolved.
