Tibetans protest against Beijing Olympics

New Delhi, Aug 8 (UNI) Hundreds of Tibetans here today launched ''indefinite fast for Tibet - without food and water'' during a protest against the Beijing Olympics and continuing ''occupation'' of Tibet by China.

The protest was organised by Tibetan Youth Congress(TYC) in which Tibetans from all over India participated.

''The Chinese people deserve to host the Olympic Games, but what the Tibetans and the Chinese people deserve more is freedom :freedom of speech, of religion, of electing their own government, of feeling safe in their own homes,'' said the protesters who were shouting slogans against the Chinese government.

''Despite heavy rains, people have come here to protest. They are getting impatient, we are trying to calm them,'' said one of the organisers of the protest.

''Politically, Indian government may be inclined towards the Chinese regime, but people of India are with us,'' he added.

The protesters were joined by activists of the Burmese Democratic Forces(BDF) in India, who were marking the 20th anniversary of the 8888 uprising.

''Both Tibet and Burma need democracy and freedom; we have the same cause, so we are together,'' said BDF president Kyaw Than.
