Orissa cabinet approves legislation for Vedant University

Bhubaneswar, Aug 4 (UNI) The Orissa government today decided to enact legislation for the establishment of Vedant University,a world class multi-disciplinary Research University with a modern self contained township in Puri.

The decision was taken at a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik.

Briefing newspersons after the cabinet meeting Chief Secretary Ajit Kumar Tripathy said an MoU was signed between the state government and the Vedant Foundation which was subsequently known as Anil Agarwal Foundation for the purpose by the company.

The University would offer academic programmes like Basic Science, Humanity, Engineering, Business Management, Law, Medicine, Agriculture, Performing Arts and Bio-Science and shall be a centre of excellence.

The state government, the chief secretary said, would provide 6000 acres of land by way of acquisition and alienation. The University would be unitary and self financing but the state government might exercise control in the affairs of the university in the interest of the students as and when required, Mr Tripathy said.
