Cabinet decides to amend Act to extend gratuity to teachers

New Delhi, July 31 (UNI) The Union Cabinet today gave its approval for the introduction of new legislation amending the Payment of Gratuity Act, 1972, to cover the teachers in the educational institutions under the Act with retrospective effect from April three, 1997.

A meeting of the cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, also decided to give its approval for the withdrawal of the Payment of Gratuity (Amendment) Bill, 2007 from Parliament.

Information and Broadcasting Minister Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi told mediapersions that the new bill was being introduced in keeping with a recommendation to this effect by the Parliamentary Standing Committee concerned.
