HC notice to SGPC on medical college admissions

Chandigarh, Jul 29 (UNI) The Punjab and Haryana High Court today issued notices for August 11 to Shiromani Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee (SGPC) on a petition filed by Gurleen Kaur and others who alleged they had been denied admission to MBBS course by the a SGPC run institute on the ground that they trimmed beards or plucked eyebrows in violation of norms of Sikh religion.

The notices have also been issued to the Punjab medical education secretary and Sri Guru Ram Dass Institute of Medical Education and Research, run by the SGPC at Amritsar which had denied the admissions.

The notices were issued by the Division Bench of Justice Ashutosh Mohunta and Justice Nirmaljit Kaur.

The institute admits 50 percent students to MBBS course on the basis of state-conducted pre medical entrance test and remaining fifty percent from amongst candidates who adher to the principles of Sikhism.
