Three candidates in fray for Nepalese Presidency

Kathmandu, July 18 : Three candidates from the CPN-Maoist, the Nepali Congress and the CPN-UML are in the fray to contest the July 19 Presidential elections in Nepal.

For the post of Vice President, four candidates backed by the Maoist, the Nepali Congress, the CPN-UML and the Madhesi People's Rights Forum (MPRF) are contesting the election.

The Maoists have proposed Ram Raja Prasad Singh, a left leader from Koiladi Village Development Committee of Saptari for the post of Presidential and its Constituent Assembly (CA) lawmaker professor Shanta Shrestha for the Vice President's post.

Similarly, the Nepali Congress has registered its General Secretary Dr. Ram Baran Yadav for the President's post and Maan Bahadur Bishwakarma for the Vice President's post.

The UML has proposed the name of Ram Prit Paswan, Nepal Assembly Vice-Chairman of then bicameral parliament for the post of President and central member Asta Laxmi Shakya for Vice President.

The MPRF said it would support Ram Raja Prasad Singh, proposed by the Maoists, for the President's post. It has registered the name of Parmananda Jha, former Justice of Nepal Supreme Court, for the Vice Presidential post.

The candidates will be contesting in the elections that will be held at the International Convention Center on Saturday from 11am to 2 pm.

Results will be announced by the Constituent Assembly on the same day, Kantipur reported. he President can be elected by a simple majority. If none of the candidates gets a majority, the top two candidates will head for a second round of voting.

Only the Constituent Assembly members are eligible to vote in the election.
