PM bows to Amar Singh's demands
{image-amar singh_16072008.jpg news.oneindia.in}New Delhi, Jul 16: New political equations in the country may have a windfall on the telecom sector. With Samajwadi Party (SP) assuming an important role in the political scenario, the government is forced to give in to its demands. One such demand from SP's Amar Singh is being considered by the PMO.
Late last week, Amar Singh had demanded that existing GSM operators who hold excess spectrum beyond 6.2 MHz should be charged a one time market rate fee for this. The PMO has now reportedly forwarded this demand to the communications and finance ministry to look into it. As per Amar Singh's estimations charging a one time fee of Rs. 1,312 crore for every MHz of spectrum held beyond 6.2 MHz will help the government in gaining Rs. 10,000 crore.
Anil Ambani also made a similar demand last year. Mr Singh's proximity to RCom Chairman is not a secret affair.
