Deserted by parents, daughter finds new home

Sambalpur, Jul 16 (UNI) A girl, deserted by her parents for refusing to marry a person of their choice, has found a new home, thanks to the untiring efforts of women Self Help Group (SHG) activists.

Rama Sahu, a native of Gaisilet, settled in Barpali, had agreed to a marriage proposal for his daughter, to a man from Chhattisgarh who offered him Rs 20,000, on June 11.

However, his daughter Mita protested the proposal vehemently and refused to marry the unknown person.

She was allegedly tortured by her parents, but remained adamant in her decision.

Her parents finally abandoned the girl following which the members of the Maa Saraswati Self Help Group (SHG), led by its president Rambha Suna and secretary Geeta Majuda, came to the rescue of the helpless girl.

Owing to their sincere efforts, Manoj Nag, a cycle mechanic of nearby village Lenda, came forward to marry the girl. His parents also gave their consent.

The marriage was solemnised on Monday. The members of the SHG also presented gifts (not dowry) according to their capacity to the newly wed couple.
