TN govt withdraws defamation case against VCK chief

Chennai, Jul 8 (UNI) The Tamil Nadu government today withdrew a defamation case filed against Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) chief Thol Thirumavalavan in 2000.

While the DMK government was in power in 2000, Mr K Kalimuthu, IPS was appointed as City Police Commissioner. When Mr Thirumavalavan criticised the appointment, the city police filed a defamation case against him and filed a chargesheet in IIIrd Additional Sessions Court in Chennai.

After a long gap of eight years, City Public Prosecutor (CPP) Shajahan filed a charge withdrawal petition. In his petition, the CPP submitted that the government was not willing to pursue the case further.

Accepting the petition, Judge Gokul Doss allowed the prosecution to withdraw the case and relieved Mr Thirumavalavan of the charges.
