Basu calls for strengthening Left unity on his 95th birthday

Kolkata, Jul 8(UNI) Veteran Marxist Jyoti Basu turned 95 today amid celebrations and greetings at his Salt Lake residence.

The day four Left parties announced to withdraw support to the UPA Government at the Centre, the CPI(M) patriarch called for strengthening Left unity and consolidating base among the people.

As West Bengal Transport Minister Subhash Chakraborty, Mr.Basu's protege, celebrated the day with usual grandiose, school children sang and danced and wished the leader on the occasion.

Party leaders, including CPI(M) Polit Bureau member and state Secretary Biman Basu, besides people from different walks of life visited Mr Basu's residence and greeted him with bouquetes.

Celebrated singer Suchitra Mitra was one of the luminaries who visited him.

The former Chief Minister, who has been keeping an indifferent health for quite sometime, voluntarily stepped aside from the party's Polit Bureau recently.
