Three injured in police firing in Srinagar

Srinagar, Jun 23 (UNI) Three people were injured in firing while 25 others wounded when police fired teargas shells and resorted to lathicharge to disperse demonstrators in the down town city today.

Official sources said a group of people this afternoon took to streets at Nowhatta and other down town areas, protesting against the transfer of forest land to Shri Amarnath Shrine Board (SASB).

However, when the demonstrators, raising anti-SASB and government slogans, were marching towards the main city, police fired teargas shells and resorted to batoncharge. About 25 demonstrators and some police personnel were injured.

Later, police fired to disperse the demonstrators in which three people received bullet wounds. The injured were admitted to hospital where the condition of one of them was stated to be critical.

The situation in the down town was under control, but tense, the sources said.
