'Laal Juto', a film by Ray Inst bags Shanghai award

Kolkata, Jun 23 (UNI) Lal Juto, a Bengali film, produced by the Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute (SRFTI) here, has been awarded a top prize at the just-concluded 11th Shanghai International Film Festival.

An SRFTI release today claimed the movie 'Laal Juto', directed by Shweta Merchant, adjudged the 'Best Creative Idea' award, one of the five top prizes, by an international jury.

The award includes a prize money of 1,500 dollars.

The twenty-three-minute film based on a short story by Kamal Kumar Mazumdar was the only Indian entry at the festival.

''It is the first venture of SRFTI students to win an international award. It depicts the journey of an adolescent into maturity. Earlier, the movie also made it to the Kerala Film Festival,'' the release added.

The film's cinematographer Harendra Singh was present at the festival and interacted with the audience both at the Shanghai Festival Centre and Shanghai University.

Altogether 400 entries were received from film institutes in 20 countries for the competition which judged films produced by students and 24 movies were shortlisted for final consideration.
