Elephant kills forest guard on duty in North Goa

Panaji, Jun 23 (UNI) A wild elephant fatally attacked and killed a forest guard today, who was scouting the forest in Halarna village to prevent the animals from damaging the crops.

Deputy Conservator of Forests (north) M K Sambhu said the victim Rajendra K Bhagat (49) was among nine guards, who along with 20 villagers were conducting a survey in the forest to prevent the wild elephants from damaging the crops.

The mishap occurred at around 0030 hrs. Others however ran to safety. The elephants strayed into Goa from Maharashtra.

The body was sent for a post-mortem examination.
