Maiden DMK women's wing conference off to colourful start
Cuddalore, Jun 14 (UNI) Amid fanfare, the first-ever women's wing conference of the ruling DMK in Tamil Nadu got off to a colourful start in this coastal town, this morning.
The conference was formally inaugurated with the hoisting of the party flag by Advocate Vasanthi Ganesan at the sprawling Manjakuppam grounds in the presence of DMK President and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi, his poetess daughter and Rajya Sabha MP Kanimozhi and poet Ms Thamizhachi Thangapandian, who was given the unique honour of hoisting the party flag at the recent DMK youth conference at Tirunelveli.
The conference was inaugurated by party's women's wing Secretary Sankari Narayanan.
Senior Union and State Ministers of the DMK, party MPs, MLAs and functionaries from across the state had descended on this port town for the two-day conference, aimed at wooing the women folk to play a major role in nation-building.
Ms Kanimozhi said the conference was aimed at giving a thrust to the demand for 33 per cent reservation for women in Parliament and State Legislatures.
The conference would not only reflect on the path treaded by women, but also highlight the importance of women playing a major role in politics.
