Photo exhibition on environment in Trichy from today

Tiruchirapalli, June 5 (UNI) A four-day photographic exhibition on environment and nature to commemorate World Environment Day was inaugurated by the city-based Barn Owl Nature Club here today.

According to Club Adviser Dr B Venkataramani, the theme for this year's exhibition was to create awareness about the richness and diversity of nature and the need to conserve environment and the habitat.

Dr Venkataramani, who was earlier with the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), Mumbai, pointed out that this was the ninth thematic exhibition.

He said the exhibition, displaying nearly 75 species of plants, was organised in different sections like palms, trees, plants, shrubs, climbers and avenue trees. Photographs included that of Talipot palm, which flowers once in 35 to 40 years with millions of flowers (the highest inflorescence in the plant kingdom), bamboo flowering and water hyacinth, grown to control water pollution.

He said that while the photos were taken by himself, the information and text provided were collected by his daughter V Prabhadevi and wife V Kamala.
