Violence erupts in Nanoor over RSP victory in Panchayat elections

Bolpur, May 31 (UNI) In a post-poll RSP - CPI(M) clash, at least ten houses were set on fire in Notungram village under Nanoor police station of Birbhum district today.

Exchange of fire was reported between the RSP and CPI(M) party workers and police arrested four people. EFR had also been deployed in the area.

RSP leader Hafizul Rahman said, ''Since the CPI(M) party lost in the gram panchayat elections, they had taken revenge by setting the homes of our workers on fire.

''They even tortured the women folk in these homes,'' he added.

He alleged that CPI(M) activists attacked their workers and forcibly stopped the victory rally taken out by them in the area.

He further alleged that the CPI(M) supporters later set afire the homes of the RSP workers who participated in the victory rally.

Meanwhile, CPI(M) leader Hasibur Rahman alleged that it was the RSP workers who attacked the CPI(M) activists and set a few houses afire.

''One of our workers has also been attacked,'' he said.

Police said later peace talks were held between the two party leaders to resolve their differences and peace had been restored in the area.
