Bangalore, May 30 (UNI) Karnataka Governor Rameshwar Thakur tonight announced Rs 50,000 compensation to the next kin of the 40 dead in yesterday's lorry mishap in Hassan district.
Condoling the deaths, the Governor in a statement expressed deep distress over the incident near Arkalgud in which 40 people were killed and about 50 people were injured when the lorry fell into a 50 feet ditch while the driver was reversing the vehicle following HT wire laying on the ground.
The Governor also announced compensation of RS 25,000 to those injured.
"Immediate relief measures to provide medical care to the injured people has been ensured," he said.
The vehicle carrying mostly women was crossing a tank bund. In a bid to avoid coming into contact of a low lying high tension electric wire ahead, the driver reversed the vehicle but it had slipped and rolled down three times and fell into the ditch crushing the people to death.
