Excise Police fire in air to quell mob violence
Puducherry, May 30 (UNI) The Excise Police fired six rounds in the air last night at Bahour to quell a mob which attacked them with stones and other weapons.
According to police, on a tip-off that rectified spirit was being smuggled out from Bahour area, an Excise team conducted the raid last evening.
When they intercepted a tanker lorry and a car, they were attacked by a group causing injuries to a head constable who was hospitalised. Following the attack, the Excise team called off the raid and commenced it in the night again with reinforcement from the IRB.
Again they were attacked. To quell the violence, Excise Inspector Rajendran fired six rounds in the air forcing the group to escape under the cover of darkness taking away the tanker with them.
However, the team manage to impound the car and arrest the occupants.
The car belonged to Villianur Commune Panchayat Vice-President Thavamurugan who was absconding.
Police conducted a search for him and in the process, came across 300-litre of spirit inside the septic tank of his house and seized it.
