Cement sale thru coop building centre in Pondy

Puducherry, May 30 (UNI) In a bid to fulfill the promise given on the floor of the Territorial Assembly, Puducherry Chief Minister N Rangasamy today inaugurated the sale of imported cement through the cooperative building centre here.

Talking to newspersons here on the occasion, he said 50 tonnes of cement imported from Pakistan were being sold through the centre at a cost of Rs 215 per bag, as against Rs 255 in the open market.

Mr Rangasamy said that since 1991, the building centre here was catering to the needs of consumers as construction materials to the tune of Rs 20 crore were sold through it. Tax exemption was being provided to the materials being brought to the centre for sale from other states.

He said the daily waged employees of the centre who had put in more than two years service would be regularised and a cash coupon for Rs 5,000 would be given to the permanent staff and Rs 4,000 to the temporary staff to encourage them.

He said the administration was taking steps to curb price rise and steps were being taken to supply essential commodities through the Public Distribution System.
