Closely-related lovers commit suicide after eloping

Hoshiarpur, May 9 (UNI) Apparently fearing a social backlash over their affair, two closely-related lovers, who had eloped from their house, allegedly committed suicide in village Dadh Shangla in Mukerian sub divisionin of this district yestrday, police today said.

Jagir Masih (32) and his sister-in-law Venus (30), both of village Bhattian Jattan were found writhing under a tree in village Dadh shangla, police said. Both breathed their last while some passers-by were shifting them to Civil Hospital, Mukerian.

Jagir Masih and his brother Sohan Masih's wife Venus had three children each, said the police.

Jagir Masih and Venus were allegedly having an affair for some time and both eloped on May 7. But social resentment and family outcry reportedly led them to take the extreme step.

However, no suicide note has been found and proceedings under section 174 of the CrPC had been initiated, police said.
