Jamia to launch Fayyaz Khan Center for Music and Research

New Delhi, May 3 (UNI) To promote research and documentation in classical Hindustani music, Jamia Millia Islamia will set up the Fayyaz Khan Center for Music and Research (FKCMR) which will also serve as a forum for practitioners.

The Jamia Academic Council recently approved the project, named on legendary Ustad Faiyyaz Khan (1881-1950).

A Jamia spokesperson said the accessibility of music related manuscripts in the University's archives-- such as Faqirullah's Raag Darpan-- as well as the rich reserves of language skills in Hindi, Urdu and Persian will go a long way in promoting research.

''The Centre is also a tribute to a man who combined in an exemplary fashion the enormous expertise of a practitioner and performer with a deep knowledge of the system of music he inherited as a member of a distinguished line of musicians,'' she added.

The Academic Council also gave its approval for launch of the Ale Ahmad Suroor Memorial Lecture in memory of the noted Urdu critic, writer and Padma Bhushan awardee.
