TN introduces Bill for extra levy on import of liquor
Chennai, Apr 29 (UNI) This news will not bring ''cheers'' to connoisseurs of alcohol: the Tamil Nadu government today introduced a Bill in the state Assembly to levy extra amount on import of liquor.
The Bill, introduced by PWD Minister Duraimurugam, proposed to charge Rs 450 extra for every litre of liquor imported from abroad or procured from other states.
Tabling the Bill, he said since the Centre had scrapped excise duty on import of liquor from July last, there was no stability in the prices of liquor.
There were volatility in prices due to the difference in excise duties in the liquor imported from other states and abroad.
With a view to stabilising the prices, the government had decided to charge an extra amount of Rs 450 per litre.
