Debt-ridden farmer commits suicide in Buldhana
Nagpur, Apr 12 (UNI) A debt-ridden farmer allegedly committed suicide by setting himself afire in Buldhana district in Vidarbha region of Maharashtra.
The Vidarbha Jan Andolan Samiti (VJAS), a voluntary organisation working among farmers in the region, has claimed that the farmer, Babanrao Jeughale (48), of village Warvand in the district, went to his field yesterday, lit a pyre and jumped into it.
Jeughale was among the eight farmers who committed suicide in the last three days in the region, a VJAS press release claimed here today.
Besides Jeughale, the other seven farmers included three each from Amravati and Yavatmal districts and one from Chandrapur district, the release added.
With this, the number of farmers who have ended their lives in 2008 has touched 275, the VJAS said. The number of farmers who took the extreme step after the announcement of the Rs 60,000 crore loan waiver by the Centre had touched 109, it added.
