NHRC recommends Rs 1 lakh aid for UP, Mah custodial death victims
New Delhi, Apr 9 (UNI) The National Human Rights Commission has recommended to Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra Governments to pay Rs 1 lakh monetary relief to families of victims of custodial death.
The Commission has directed the State Chief Secretaries to submit compliance report along with proof of payment within eight weeks.
Undertrail Kishanji alias Shyamji was fatally attacked while he was being escorted by the police from Orai Railway Station, to the court complex in a rickshaw. The assailants managed to escape and the prisoner succumbed to injuries.
In another case, undertrial Swapnil alias Pintu Dilipsingh Shirke was shot dead by unidentified people on June 19, 2002 while he was being escorted by police to a city court in Nagpur.
Considering both the cases as that of negligence in prevention of violation of human rights, the Commission issued show-cause notice to the Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh governments.
''Both the state governments did not respond to the notices,'' the Commission said.
