New Delhi, Mar 28 (UNI) The Delhi Legislative Assembly today witnessed an uproar on the issue of alleged attack on Congress MLA Surinder Kumar by a BJP Councillor and his associates with congress members demanding punishment and arrest to those responsible for the incident.

Raising the issue during Zero hour, Congress MLA Mukesh Sharma said it had been 24 days since March 4 when Surinder Kumar, a Congress MLA from Bawana, was attacked by some BJP activists led by Municipal Councillor Narayan Singh at a function to inaugurate some social welfare works in his constituency but still no action had been taken against those responsible for the attack.

Speaking on the issue, Mr Surinder Kumar said while no action had been taken against the perpetrators of the attack, an FIR had been launched against him by the municipal councillor.

Describing it as a serious matter, Congress members led by Mr Sharma demanded that the Chief Minister make a statement on the issue in the House stating what action had been taken in the matter.

Upon this, Deputy Speaker Shoiab Iqbal, read out a statement made by the Chief Minister in the matter which said in the light of the attack on Mr Surinder Kumar, two security officers are deployed for his personal security besides enhancing the security outside his house. Also, an FIR had been filed against the councillor.

The statement also said the matter was being investigated by a senior official of the Delhi Police.

Not satisfied by the CM's written reply, the Congress members demanded Mr Iqbal to direct the commissioner to submit an Action Taken Report on the matter in the House by March 31. Mr Mukesh Sharma also demanded that the counter FIR filed by the Councillor against Mr Surinder Kumar be immediately withdrawn and that the culprits be arrested forthwith.

In a bid to pacify the members, the Deputy Speaker directed the Chief Minister that keeping in view the sentiments expressed by the members of the House in the matter, an impartial probe be conducted into the incident by the crime branch.

Still dissatisfied by the reply, the Congress members insisted that an ATR in the matter be submited to the House by March 31.

Amid the uproar, the House was adjourned, at 1545 hrs, for half an hour.

After the House reassembled, the Deputy Speaker said a special committee of the House had been constituted to look into the matter and that the commissioner was being directed to get the matter investigated by the crime Branch and submit an Action Taken Report in the House by March 31.
