Several injured in police-villager clash; 29 held
Agra, Mar 24 (UNI) At least 29 people, including a nagar panchayat president, had been arrested following the clash between police and villagers over alleged eve-teasing incident during a religious procession in Kharegarh town here.
The incident happened when few youth misbehaved with a woman in a religious procession and beat up nagar panchayat president, Anil Garg's brother. The culprits were caught and handed over to police, who later released them.
Mr Garg along with the villagers, reached the police station, where he had heated argument with the police inspector.
The argument turned violent and villagers resorted to stone pelting and vandalised police property, besides torching several police vehicles and setting ablaze the police station.
The police resorted to firing and used force to disperse the mob.
Many, including policemen, got injured in the incident. Twenty nine people, including the nager panchayat president had been arrested in this connection.
As a precautionary measure, area police officer A K Singh and Inspector D A Verma had been transferred, whereas inspector Parshuram had been posted here from Lucknow.
District Magisterate Mukesh Meshram and senior police superintendent Neera Rawat are keeping strict vigil in the area.
However, situation is said to be under control.
Meanwhile, the DM had ordered a magisterial inquiry into the incident.
