Nepal EC urges govt to step up security

Kathmandu, Mar 20 (UNI) The Election Commission (EC) has urged the government to strengthen security after the murder of Peoples' Front Nepal candidate Kamal Adhikari in Banke district in western part of the Himalayan nation.

Adhikari was shot dead yesterday by an armed group active in Terai area bordering with India.

Police arrested two people.

The EC said the government should take strong action against the perpetrators of murder and provide security to the political parties participating in the Constituent Assembly (CA) elections.

The Home Ministry condemned the incident, saying the murder was carried out to postpone the polls.

Officials said the election will be held as scheduled on April 10.

The CA polls are taking place for the first time in the country to write a new constitution that will also decide the fate of now suspended monarchy which ruled over 240 years.
