Writ against quota for Christians,Muslims

Madurai, Mar 12 (UNI) A writ petition seeking a direction to stay a Tamil Nadu Government ordinance providing separate seven per cent reservation for Christians and Muslims from the overall reservation for Backward Classes, has been filed at the Madurai Bench of Madras High Court here today.

Mr Justice K Venkataraman said he would wait for the outcome of a similar petition filed before the Principal seat at Chennai and then decide on admitting the petition.

Mr S Amalan Dhanaseelan, a BC Christian submitted Christians and Muslims were already coming under the Backward category.

The separate reservation only snatched away the opportunity provided to them, especially when they were sponsored by the employment exchange.

In the petitioner's own case, his name was sponsored last year for appointment as secondary grade teacher.

The District Employment Office did not sponsor him this year, as there was a separate roster for him and he had been pushed by 200 points (places) behind others.

The reservation within reservation was detrimental and unconstitutional, he contended and wanted the ordinance to be declared unconstitutional.
