Tempo driver shot dead, UPSRTC bus torched

Varanasi, Mar 7 (UNI) An irate mob of students shot dead a tempo driver, following a spat in front of UP College here today.

The deceased was identified as Sahab Ali.

Shopkeeper Sunil Yadav also fell prey to a stray bullet in the clash.

Later, a mob of shopkeepers in retaliation pelted stones and vandalised two buses, including an Uttar Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (UPSRTC) bus.

According to police, three days back, some students of the college had hired a private bus for picnic. On return, the students had a heated exchange of words with the driver over fare.

On interception, the students also had a spat with some of the shopkeepers.

Police resorted to lathi-charge on the agitating shopkeepers.

Meanwhile, police in strength had been deployed to avert any fresh violence.
