Army seting example in organ donation: Antony
New Delhi, Mar 7 (UNI) Defence Minister A K Antony today lauded the Army for setting an example in organ donation, which was vital for the development of a vibrant transplant programme in the country.
''The men in uniform have led the way in organ donation and set an example, even in medical and legal cases,'' Mr Antony said while felicitating the families of organ donors at a function here.
He also commended the medical fraternity for its efforts to treat patients suffering from liver related diseases.
Speaking after inaugurating the three-day 16th Annual Conference of the Indian National Association for Study of Liver (INASL), being organised by the Army Medical Corps, Mr Antony emphasised that organ donation was crucial to the development of a vibrant transplant programme in the country.
On the occasion, a booklet containing vital information on the brain stem death and organ donation was released by Director General of Medical Services of the Army, Lt Gen S Mukherjee.
The Army Medical Corps is doing yeoman service in the field of organ donation through the Army Organ Retrieval and Transplant Organisation (AORTA). In its second year, AORTA services have benefited several patients, armed personnel as well as civilians.
