Congress to emerge as single largest party in Meghalaya: Kyndiah

Shillong, Feb 24 (UNI) Union Tribal Affairs Minister P R Kyndiah today exuded confidence that the Congress would emerge as the single largest party in the 60-member Meghalaya Assembly.

The Congress has fielded 60 candidates for the March 3 Assembly elections.

''We are inching towards getting an absolute majority (30 to 31 seats) in the 60-member House,'' Mr Kyndiah, the local MP, told UNI here.

The Union Minister also claimed that the Congress would also improve its seats tally in the Garo Hills area, considered as the Nationalist Congress Party's (NCP) heartland.

Garo Hills is the home turf of the NCP's Chief Ministerial candidate P A Sangma. The NCP has fielded its candidates in all the 24 seats in Garo Hills.

''This time, we are expecting 10 to 12 seats from Garo Hills and that is why we are confident to retain power in Meghalaya,'' Mr Kyndiah said.
