Cong to form government of its own in Meghalaya: Fernandes

Shillong, Feb 18 (UNI) Union Minister of State for Labour Oscar Fernandes today exuded confidence that the Congress will form government of its own in Meghalaya.

''This time we are aiming for single party and will able to form our own government,'' he told mediapersons here.

However, no single party has ever been able to form a government in the state during the last three decades.

Mr Fernandes, who was here on a visit to oversee the party's poll preparation, said the party will retain power on the basis of its achievements during the past five years.

''We have shown our commitments to the people and that's why people have faith in our party,'' the AICC leader stated.

The Congress has fielded candidates in all the 60 Assembly constituencies with Chief Minister D D Lapang seeking his re-election from Nongpoh constituency and Speaker Martin M Danggo from Langrin.

Mr Fernandes said the Congress has adopted its poll strategy to win all seats in the March three Assembly poll.

In 2003, the Congress which fielded 60 candidates bagged 22 seats and later increased the tally in the House after six Nationalist Congress Party MLAs joined the party.
