Nagaland Governor appeals to all for free and fair polls
Kohima, Jan 26 (UNI) Nagaland Governor K Sankaranarayanan today appealed to government officials and all sections of the society to create a conducive atmosphere for peaceful elections in the state.
Unfluring the national tricolour at the Secretariat Plaza on the occasion of the Republic day here, Mr Sankaranarayanan said elections were a necessity to maintain the democratic process.
''The government officials must leave no stone unturned to ensure peaceful, impartial and free elections,'' he said.
He also appealed to all sections of the society to extend their fullest cooperation in the endeavour to create a conducive atmosphere for violence-free elections.
''In order to attain this objective of welfare of all, the essential requirement is peace. Maintenance of law and order and securing the life and property of the citizens are the prime objectives and responsibility of the government. The district administration and police officials have to rise to the occasion and ensure maintenance of peace and order,'' he added.
He said while the people yearned for peace and development, there was also a need for responsive and accountable governance.
Earlier, the Governor took the salute of 12 contingents of the Assam Rifles, CRPF, Indian Reserve Battalion, Nagaland Armed Police, District Executive Force, Home Guards, Ex-servicemen, NCC and Bharat Scouts and Guides. Altogether 15 tableaux were exhibited during the function.
