Manipur to thwart rebel interference during R-Day celebrations
Imphal, Jan 23 (UNI) Security has been beefed up in Manipur as four major militant groups called a general strike on the Republic Day.
The KLO, MPLF, TPDF and ULFA, four of the major rebel groups of the North-East, have called a general strike in the entire state between 0100 and 1800 hours on January 26, and urged the people to support their call.
However, the Manipur People's Liberation Front (MPLF) Convener stated, ''Essential services will be exempted from the purview of the strike.'' Police said a large number of security personnel had been deputed at strategic points to thwart any attempt by the insurgents to disrupt the celebrations.
Meanwhile, rehearsals were on in full swing and various state government departments had started constructing tableaux. Cultural programmes will also be organised as part of the celebrations.
