Dhaka Univ teachers freed from jail after clemency
Dhaka, Jan 22 (UNI) Bangladesh freed four Dhaka University (DU) teachers this afternoon-- three of whom were pardoned by President Iajuddin Ahmed after being convicted of breaching Emergency Power Rules and the fourth one was acquitted of the same charges by a court here.
The Dhaka Central Jail authorities said they released the convicts following President Iajuddin Ahmed's clemency to them while the fourth was freed as the court acquitted him.
The freed academics were given a warm reception at the jail gate by their colleagues, students and relatives at about 1715 hrs (Bangladesh time), the Daily Star reported.
Earlier in the day, Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Golam Rabbani sentenced DU Teachers' Association (Duta) President Prof Sadrul Amin, General Secretary Prof Anwar Hossain and science faculty Dean Prof Harun-ar-Rashid to two years in prison and acquitted applied physics department Chairman Prof Neem Chandra Bhowmik and 15 students of the university on the charges of breaking EPRs during campus unrest in August last year.
