HC denies bail plea of Uphaar convict
New Delhi, Jan 17 (UNI) The Delhi High Court today dismissed the bail plea of a former manager and convict in the Uphaar cinema tragedy case.
Justice H R Malhotra, while perusing Radha Krishan Sharma's medical reports submitted by the jail authorities, ordered his bail plea dismissed. However, he called for another opinion from the doctors of Ram Manohar Lohia hospital.
Serving a seven-year sentence in the case, Sharma, a former manager of the ill-fated theatre, had moved a petition on Tuesday for bail on medical grounds. Sharma's counsel had told the court that his client was too ill to serve the sentence in jail.
The Central Bureau of Investigation was steadfast in its opposition to his bail plea.
A trial court had on November 20 last year, convicted all the 12 accused under various provisions of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) for causing the death of 59 people during the screening of the Hindi film "Border" on June 13, 1997.
