74 parties register for Nepal election

Kathmandu, Jan 15 (UNI) A total of 74 political parties, mostly unknown in the previous election, registered with the Nepalese Election Commission for the upcoming Constituent Assembly polls set for April 10.

Less than a dozen parties are known at national level, including the Nepali Congress, CPN-UML and CPN Maoists.

The recently formed Terai Madhesh Loktantrik Party, has also been registered with the Commission, which set January 14 as the last date for the registration of parties for the polls.

The election is being held to write a new Constitution that is expected to give future direction for democracy in the Himalayan nation ruled by the monarchy for nearly 240 years.
