Five members of family attempt suicide

Surat, Jan 6 (UNI) Five members of a family, including three children, attempted suicide here today by first allegedly consuming poison and later jumping into the Tapi river.

According to the police, Mritunjay Singh (45), his wife Rekha (40) and thier three children -- Pravin (15), Priyanka (13) and Navin (11) -- first consumed poison in the house. After consuming the poison, he took them to the Amroli bridge and jumped into the Tapi river along with the kids.

While four of them have been rescued and shifted to the civil hospital here, but the body of Navin is still to be recovered.

The motive behind the drastic step is yet to be ascertained, police added.
