Patients suffering from spinal problems heave a sigh of relief
Bangalore, Jan 5(UNI) St Philomena's Hospital and National University Singapore, today jointly organised an live demostration of total Disc Replacement Surgery to treat cervical disc prolapse.
The new surgical treatment for the spine uses cutting edge technology and advanced materials to recreate the actions of a normal inter-vertebral disc, replacing the old diseased one, a press release said.
The newest artifical disc which moves in all three axis, complements the movements of the rest of the spine and lasts for a lifetime. The advantaqge is that it does not react adversely with body tisues and not requires a life threathening major surgery.
A spine specialist from National University Hospital,Dr Hee Hwan Tak said "after TDR the spine shows an excellant mobility on par with the erstwhile normal disc and the patient practically may expect less wear and tear of the neighbouring segments of the spine and reduced risk of accelerated disc disease spondylotic degeration at other levels." Dr Tak said that this not only allows young patients to retain a physically active lifestyle but also protects the rest of the spine into the future.
