Kohima, July 14: With a view to utilising the best varieties of bamboo in Nagaland,China will help the state government to establish bamboo-based industries.

Official sources said here yesterday that Director General of China Bamboo Resources Centres (CBRC) Wang Shudong, who arrived here on July 12 along with a five-member delegation, held discussions with the chief secretary and officials of the Nagaland Bamboo Mission, the development commissioner and other officials and signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with them.

According to the agreement, two technical experts from China will be camping in Nagaland for the next three months to train the people about various industrial projects based on bamboo. The projects have been taken up under the Director Foreign Investment.

Addressing newspersons here, Mr Shudong said Nagaland had better qualities and more varieties of bamboo than China and there was tremendous scope to explore the economic uses of bamboo.

He added that China had developed techniques to harvest bamboo shoot twice a year and the technology would be brought to Nagaland, which would help the state to grow abandoned bamboo from various varieties.

Initially, the bamboo charcoal industry would be taken up, which has high demand in the market and the CBRC would help the Nagaland government, both economically and in the technical know-how.

Mr Shudong said this bamboo mission had been taken up by China in the early eighties due to which the country was successful in developing several bamboo industries.

Although Nagaland had taken up this bamboo policy recently, it has a huge market, both in India and abroad, Mr Shudong added.
